Total Physical Response for Bilingual/ESL Students
Friday August 7, 2026 11:15am - 11:55am CDT
TPR stands for Total Physical Response. It is an instructional strategy that teaches language or vocabulary through physical movement. TPR is highly effective for English Language Learners (ELLs) and bilingual students but is also an effective strategy for the monolingual classroom.

How This Strategy Supports Language Development?  When using TPR, teachers model an action for each new vocabulary or phrase or ask students to create an appropriate gesture for key terms and phrases. Then, students respond to commands using that word or phrase by doing the action or gesture.
